~*Miscellaneous Moffitt Musings*~ In the RP Writer's Guide there are notes from Gary Raymond (Moffitt) that indicate that Moffitt's character was partly inspired by Stirling. Those notes also indicate Moffitt as being of the Scots Guards (not the Scots Greys as said in the pilot), then volunteering for a Commando unit that went to North Africa before joining the Rat Patrol just like Stirling. However, in the pilot "Chase of Fire Raid," Moffitt says he's with the Scots Greys. But, the Scots Greys, the last cavalry regiment to 'unhorse' in 1941, were in Palestine when the war broke out and were never involved at Dunkirk and they wear grey berets. The Scots Guards were deployed in Egypt at that time as well. Either of those units would have well suited someone with Moffitt's knowledge of North Africa and the Arabs, especially as members of both units would later serve with the L.R.D.G or the S.A.S. However, Moffitt wears a black Royal Tank Regiment beret (with the proper R.T.R. badge in the pilot) and, in a later episode, knows how to drive a tank (although he could have acquired that skill when the Scots Greys mechanized as well). Since the R.T.R (4th and 7th) was part of the British Expeditionary Force that was involved at Dunkirk, being in the R.T.R. fits Moffitt's early history as told in "The Fatal Reunion Raid" as well as the beret and cap badge he wears in the pilot. As to the Commando part, it's still entirely possible as the Commandos/S.A.S drew volunteers/recruits from a variety of places and he *definitely* shows signs of Commando training during his undercover exploits. Moffitt's desert expertise would have made him a choice recruit for either the L.R.D.G or the S.A.S. The earliest S.A.S personnel kept their original unit designations and insignia as they were considered a detachment, not a regiment until Stirling argued for distinct S.A.S. cap badges. The L.R.D.G. troopers usually wore the insignia and toppers of what ever unit they came from, or the 'official' unofficial hat consisting of the black R.T.R. beret with the L.R.D.G. scorpion badge. They, like Moffitt, also didn't wear any insignia on their berets while on patrol. So, continuing the train of thought, Moffitt could have been first a tanker with the R.T.R. and been at Dunkirk (after all, the British Army was notorious for assigning people to places that did NOT make the best use of their talents such as originally assigning the founder of the L.R.D.G., a desert expert, to TROPICAL East Africa). Then, after healing up, some one might finally have been bright enough to send a desert expert to the DESERT by having him join the Scots Greys in Syria. From there it would be a simple thing for him to have been recruited for service with the L.R.D.G. or the S.A.S. due to his extensive desert knowledge. But through it all, he kept his original R.T.R. beret. Pure speculation, of course. :)
